The word roulette derives from French and means a wheel. There is no clear concept about the origins of this game, but there are a few theories.
According to one of them, this game was invented by Pascal, the 17th century philosopher and mathematician from France. He made this invention in an attempt to create a perpetual motion machine. But surely he wasn’t going to use his invention for the advantage of casino; someone else might have done this.
The ancestor of roulette is the game hoka. This was also a wheel with numerated sectors and a ball, but it was much more primitive. This game was first introduced in the 18th century in a casino in France. And it turned out extremely profitable as out of 40 sectors of the wheel there were “zeros”. According to the game rules, if the ball falls on a zero sector, all the money bet goes to the casino.
Another variation of roulette was the game Odd and Even. It was a wheel with 40 sectors, half of them was marked O (odd) and another – E (even). If the ball fell on an “odd” sector, all “even” bets went to casino and vice versa. The game was rather monotonous, but quite popular among women of high society in England in the 18th century.
Another similar game called plop was popular in many casinos in Europe in the 18th century. The wheel resembled a large plate; it had 18 sectors numbered from 1 to 9. The wheel itself was motionless. Sectors with number five were considered zero. The players could bet on any sector including zero, and their win was calculated 7 to 1. Also it was possible to bet on odd/even, but then the payments were 1 to 1.
The roulette wheel, as we know it now, was first introduced in Paris in 1765.
Roulette has become very popular in all casinos in Paris, but soon, in 1798, French government made all games of chance illegal. Casinos were brought back with Napoleon. But again the gamblers could not enjoy their favorite pastime for a long time. In 1839 gambling in France was prohibited again. And only several years later casinos – already legally – are trying to attract more gamblers by presenting roulette with one zero sector.
In 1861 the first casino in Monaco is founded. Several years later, after the ban has been imposed on all casinos in Europe, Monaco has become a real capital of Gambling world.
Later, a huge Casino Palace has been built in Monte-Carlo. Gamblers from all over the world came here to try their luck. Even today, when casinos can be found everywhere – in every city and town of any country, Monte Carlo remains the genuine capital of the gambling world.
In the United States roulette was introduced in 1800 by French immigrants. It was first brought in New Orleans, and here roulette had similar history, as it had in Europe – it was prohibited many times. But still it survived, it has millions of fans all over the world and now it is rightfully considered a symbol of any casino and a symbol of gambling on the whole.
Nowadays gambling is legal and everyone can come (or better – click) and try his luck in a casino, to have fun, win some money and get bonuses.
